The President and Founder of The Training Arena is Raynard Perkins.  Ray played college basketball at Bethel College under Coach Homer Drew, and he played basketball, football, and baseball at the high school level.  Ray has over ten years of experience coaching boys and girls basketball and offering individual player development.  Ray is also a licensed IHSAA basketball referee.  Ray is from South Bend and has an extensive network of contacts in the sports “arena” through his coaching, training, and referee experience.

He understands that coaches and athletic directors are seeking that competitive edge for their athletic programs.  Parents, too, are looking for personal athletic training for their sons and daughters to increase their speed and agility, and ultimately give them that “edge” in their chosen sport.  Ray’s passion is to help young athletes reach the next level.  Ray’s vision is for The Training Arena to be the premier sports performance training facility in the area by providing “cutting edge” athletic training programs, utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.

Ric Mauch

We are thrilled to have Coach Ric Mauch on the Training Arena staff as a basketball trainer and Arena Heat travel team coach.  Coach Ric was recently named the Girls Varsity Head Coach at South Bend St. Joseph High School.  Prior to taking on the Girls program, Ric was the Assistant Boys Varsity Coach at St. Joe High School where he was the "Defensive Coordinator".  After one year with Ric, the Varsity program sliced 5 ppg game, over 100 total points on the season all while playing a higher octane, uptempo offense.  The SBSJ Indians improved their overall team record from 4-17 to 13-9 and a tie for 2nd place in the NIC conference.  Ric was the Junior Varsity coach the three years prior and compiled a 43-16 record (.728 winning percentage).

Ric has been involved with 8th grade or higher basketball for 20 years since graduating from Marquette University where he played three years of Varsity baseball and one year of football.  Basketball, where he lea
rned from Indiana Hall of Fame coach Jim Hammel, and played on Lake Central High’s 1984 Final 4 team, is where Ric garnered his style, enthusiasm and passion to pass on to the youth of today.  Coach Hammel's belief in Ric as an undersized over-achiever set Ric on his mission to coach the sport of basketball from gyms ranging from the Chicagoland area, to South Carolina (where Ric played after college baseball) to South Bend, Indiana today.

Coach Ric also helped coach his daughters grade school team to its second 16-0 season and second League and tournament champion and his son's 7th grade team to it's second runner-up championship season.  His goals for today’s youth include teaching "love of the game", mental toughness, fearlessness, defense, and playing a full court up and down attack style of basketball.

Tyler Leighton

"Ray recognized my talent at a local gym and introduced himself – it was an instant connection.  Through the years, he has helped me improve every part of my basketball game.  He developed my shooting, my ball handling, and my defensive abilities for the game itself.  Also, he helped me develop as an athlete through strength and agility workouts.  But, the most important thing that I have learned from Ray is confidence in myself and my abilities.  Now it is my turn to give back to young players what I've learned about the game.”

The Training Arena is proud to have Tyler Leighton on staff as a basketball trainer.  Tyler's experience includes private basketball training, instructional clinics, and coaching the high school travel team.  He "lives and breathes" basketball ever since he started training with Ray Perkins as a 4th grader. According to Ray, "Tyler's training work ethic is unmatched!  I am always looking for the next Tyler Leighton."

Tyler is a former Jimtown High School basketball standout, who led the Jimmies to Elkhart County's first-ever state title, the 2A crown in 2004.  He went on to play college basketball and became the first-ever 1,000 point scorer at IUSB (in 2 seasons).  Tyler is an NAIA All-American and the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year 2008/2009.  After college, he played professionally in China in the Dream Basketball League national tournament.  He led the Hangzhou team to the championship, and he was the 3 Point Champ of the tournament.
